From June 9 to 12, researchers from the Biomass Conversion and Bioprocess Technology (BCBT) group actively contributed to the European Biomass Conference and Exhibition (EUBCE 2025), held this year in Valencia, Spain.
On Monday, June 9, Prof. Solange Mussatto participated in the awarding ceremony of the Linneborn Prize 2025, which honors outstanding contributions to biomass research and innovation. She also served as Topic Organizer and Session Chair during the event.

On Tuesday, June 10, PhD researcher Bhukrit “Turbo” Ruengsrichaiya delivered an oral presentation on the depolymerization of kraft lignin using deep eutectic solvents (DES). His work demonstrated how tailored DES systems significantly enhance lignin solubility and enable the release of valuable compounds such as syringol and syringaldehyde, offering a promising route for sustainable lignin valorisation and downstream bioconversion.

On Wednesday, June 11, postdoc Sarah de Souza Queiroz presented her poster on the structural characterization and prebiotic potential of non-digestible oligosaccharides (XOS and AXOS) derived from agro-industrial side streams. Her research underscored the relevance of these compounds in functional food applications and highlighted the use of green, eco-friendly production methods.

That same day, PhD researcher Lara Campos presented her study on the enzymatic hydrolysis of cork powder, a by-product of the cork industry. She showed how hydrothermal pre-treatment enhances enzymatic sugar recovery, reinforcing the potential of cork waste for bio-based chemical production.
The BCBT group’s strong presence at EUBCE 2025 reflects our continued commitment to advancing biomass conversion technologies and supporting the transition to a more sustainable bioeconomy through innovation, collaboration, and scientific excellence.
